The Student Life-Staying Mentally&Physically Healthy

February 5, 2016 in Balance / College

Hi guys and happy Friday!! I didn’t have time for a Friday Favorites, so I thought I would still post today (even though it’s later in the day). I was so busy yesterday studying for a social psych test that I didn’t have time to write out a post (my bad) but school and sleep first!

This week was long and very busy. Definitely stressful at some points but that’s part of the game as a college student; and that’s part of the game in any part of life- there are going to be some stressful moments. But it is so important to put your health first-both your mental and physical health.

Thank you nuts.com for allowing me to share some of my favorite tips to stay healthy , whether it’s at work or as a full-time student! Nuts.com has some great snacks too, especially for when you need something quick on the go, so make sure to check out their snack page too. 🙂
I use to be a big perfectionist when it came to school. I had to get straight A’s and if I didn’t, I would consider myself a failure. I spent so many hours on schoolwork and trying to be perfect that I literally drove myself crazy. It was not healthy, at all. I am perfectly content with B’s now. Of course I try in school, but I am not going to lose sleep over an assignment. I am not going to pull all-nighters to finish something. I find that risking my physical and mental health for the sake of an A is not worth it. So what do I do to stay “healthy?” Being “healthy” for me is finding balance in all aspects of my life- friends, family, schoolwork, exercise, the foods I eat, etc. etc.

The way my schedule works this semester (On Tuesday’s and Thursday’s) I have time to work out before class. I love heading to the gym on those days to have time to clear my head and be alone. On Mondays, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s, I have class earlier so I don’t have time to; however I love stretching in the mornings to get some blood flowing in my body and get me ready for the day. During my free time between classes, I try one with cookies and ice cream and cake. So some days for lunch I’ll get a big salad, but maybe other days I’ll get something less “healthy” like a sandwich and potato chips/fries or a dessert with lunch like hot cocoa with whip cream. 🙂 Taking breaks in college is also essential to your health. Don’t overdo it- you need to remember to put yourself first at all times. If you are more tired one day, don’t force yourself to work out. If you have been studying for 2 hours, go take a break and get out of the library to maybe go for a walk or see a friend. Breaks are crucial for your well-being. Also, this is a kinda silly/self-explanatory way I make sure to stay physically healthy: drink a lot of water! I am always carrying around a water bottle to classes or when I am walking around campus. If I don’t drink enough water, I will get a bad headache. I also love drinking coffee/tea, especially while studying. I find that having something to sip on keeps me more focused and energized. Something else I do as a college student is keep snacks with me: sometimes I won’t have time to head back to my room so keeping snacks on hand is key! Some of my favorites are trail mix, granola bars like quest/lara/kind/luna/cliff, pretzels, and fruit! And for this next one: if you are a college student, keep your room clean and always lysol- seriously so so important! There are so many gross germs going around a college campus. Always make sure to wash your hands since you don’t wanna be catchin pink-eye (happened to me first semester). I always make sure to clean my desk and carry around hand-sanitizer with me.

So if you are a full-time student/worker, please make sure to prioritize your mental and physical health too. Taking time for yourself and to do things that make you happy will just enhance your overall well-being.

So tell me,

What are your favorite snacks on the go?

Are you a fan of naps?

Hope you guys have a great weekend!

Xoxo,

Lyss <3

My favorite snack is definitely a banana. I also like Clifbars or dates if I remember them. Usually I try to make my meals substantial enough so I don’t snack…but some days ya just wanna nosh all the time 🙂
I take naps if I have an early work shift and get home at lunch. I usually eat and then snooze for a bit. Sometimes I take a pre-bed nap ahaahhaha
    I’m really tired those days!

This is SO true!! As a fellow college student, balance and breaks are the key to everything! My favorite snacks are siggi’s yogurt with nut butter, banana with peanut butter, carrots and hummus, or protein bars. Naps are LIFEEEE. I try to sneak them in when I really can’t keep my eyes open or if I know I have a rehearsal or work. Thanks for sharing Lyss, always spot on <3

I used to be a huge prefectionist too with my grades and HAD to have straight As. Like you I have loosened up on myself a bit, once I realized how much stress I was putting on myself. I love apples for a portable snack, grab and go!
