September 5, 2016 in Recovery

Hi guys and happy Monday!! So glad to be posting this Mental Health Monday for y’all this week and getting the time to just sit down and write. (Even though today’s post is a vlog lol). I hope you have all been well and have been kickin’ butt at whatever you’re doing!! As always, thank you Julia for letting me link up with you this week!

I got asked to film this a few weeks ago and share my opinions with you on bikini competitions, so here we go (def prepared for some interesting feedback). But again, I do not judge anyone who does these competitions!! Just sharing my opinions on it all for you. 🙂 I think mental health is crucial obviously, and for me doing one of these competitions would jeopardize my mental health and relationship with food.

Thanks for watching guys and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel!

Now tell me

What are your opinions on these competitions?

Do you like watching vlogs? ( I loveee watching them!)

Have a wonderful Monday and a great Labor Day!! Hope you are all enjoying the long weekend. 🙂

Yeah you’d have to pay me BIG money to do one of these. What I think is ridiculous is that after all the hard work, many women have to get a boob job because they lost all their body fat! That’s a whole other health risk. I think the isolation is the part that would be so detrimental to me. I would have to give up so much quality time with my husband.
I don’t judge those that do them, like you said, but there is no way I’d find the desire to do one.

Right?? It is a whole other health risk. You have to give up so much time like you said and I really don’t think it is worth it at all!!

It is wonderful that you shared your views on this topic. I love how you say that you are changing how God made your body that it is not “natural” very well said. The whole video was wonderful and I agree with everything you said!!!!

I agree with you. I don’t judge those who have done these and enjoy them, but I’ve heard many a horror story when bikini competitions go wrong. I know it wouldn’t be healthy for me. I also in general am not a big fan of beauty competitions of any type. I think they lead to objectification of women’s bodies and I’m so ready to see women be valued for their intellect and hearts rather than their bodies.

I SO agree that they lead to objectification of women’s bodies. That is another issue I have with these competitions!! Thank you for sharing your input on this Caroline!

I do enjoy vlogs! Thanks for sharing your opinion and I agree. I would never do a bikini competition because I know it would make me turn obsessive. It’s so restricting and so hard to keep up with and it would definitely make me obsessive and crazy! Plus I think no matter how skinny or how “perfect” my body looked, I’m sure I would still pick myself apart when everyone is literally judging my body! No thank you!

I would find it very hard to not compare myself to everyone else on stage too… I just think these competitions are so unhealthy for our mental well being! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Heather!

OH … I really really don’t like the idea of bikini competitions, because they just seem so unnatural for the girl’s body. They cause her to go through a period of (my personal opinion) really harsh exercise and an unnatural diet. So… I think they are generally, not a good idea.

Totally agree! I feel they are unnatural and cause so much stress on the body!

In the past, I have thought about 2 times for about 2.3 s about doing a bikini competition to try to incite me to work on my strength training a bit more as well as to show that you can do them healthfully.
Then I realized that I like running and eating and being a natural color. And that I don’t do stripper heels and rhinestones.

lol this made me laugh 😀 Girl I feel the same way. Stripper heels are not my thang ;P

Way to be brave and tackle this topic Lyss. Totally agree that the prep required is very..unnatural and calls for a lot of isolation. No thank you!!

Thank you so much Cayanne! I agree that it does call for so much social isolation… which isn’t fun at all!

Yeaaah, I’m not a fan of bikini comps at all.

I have a family friend who recently did a bikini competition and it only made me disagree with them more! The “diet” she was on and the extreme choices she made were ridiculous – and of course as soon as the bikini competition was over she went the total opposite way (over eating etc after undereating etc for so long) only to do it all over again to make herself feel better. It just feels like a really unhealthy approach.

And let’s be honest… I don’t even think those girls look good. At all!

I see and hear about those behaviors so much after shows, and it is only natural!! And I agree. I don’t think we were made to look that way at all! Thanks for your thoughts on this Kristy!

Omg I LOVE this vlog, such an important topic!! I am not a fan of them at all. I think they’re unnatural, unhealthy, and I don’t think the women look attractive. I have yet to read Maddy’s book, but I know it’s INSANE what they have to do. My cousin’s husband did one and he said he will never do one again because it ruined his mental health and his body image, which makes me so sad. 🙁 “It’s so driven by how you look.” YES. I don’t judge anyone who may like them, but when I hear people talk about them I get so upset. Let’s just say I unfollowed a TON of Instagrammers who I thought were about good fitness but were actually about counting macros and pictures of their protein powders.

you would love Maddy’s book!! I’ll have to loan it to you sometime 🙂 I had to unfollow lots of those instagrammers as well, because it really just wasn’t good for me! I think that fitness is great, but when it is fueled by a desire to look good in a bikini and calls for counting macros/weighing food/isolating yourself, it is not worth it at ALL!

Thanks for listening babe!! love you <3

I loved hearing your thoughts on this! I have mixed feelings on bikini competitions. I do believe these women are athletes and had to work incredibly hard to achieve the level of fitness that they do. I think there are ways to have a healthy prep, but building the appropriate level of muscle mass to be completion ready takes a long time. Many people who just decide they want to do a competent don’t take the time to build muscle (eat, train, and eat more!) and just decide to diet to look lean. I think that is the line between these competitions being healthy and unhealthy. In addition, many of these athletes will tell you that what they do (especially during peak week) is not healthy or maintainable. These are the competitions I find inspiring because they recognize that the look they have on stage is reserved exclusively for the stage, and the day/ couple hours of the competition. They understand that after the show it is imperative to increase their calories and let their bodies get back to a “lifestyle fit” state as apposed to the unnatural, depleted, show state.

I think people don’t realize how much it goes into being a fitness competitor, and that’s where unhealthy habits come in. I hope my thoughts on this make sense! I love hearing your voice and opinion on this!

your thoughts totally make sense! I know competitions who can train and prep in a very healthy, non-disordered way. There are a few instagrammers I love who do shows, and it is because they maintain their mental health and well-being throughout the process. I just know for me it would be too hard to do that! And I would not want to sacrifice so much of my time prepping/working out/measuring food just to stand on stage in a bikini. But I really do think you have a good point with what you said babe!
