Mental Health Monday: 8 things to do when you’re feeling down

Hi guys and happy Monday! Hope you all had a lovely weekend and have a great Memorial Day! 🙂

Today I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite things to do when I am feeling down and sad. Like I talked about last week, sometimes we just aren’t okay in life and it’s okay to not be okay! So this week, I figured I’d share some things I do when I am feeling sad/upset.

  1. JournalFullSizeRender-3.jpgWhether it’s quotes I write down, how I’m feeling, what I’m excited for this week, a bible verse: I just think it’s so important to feel like you have a safe place to put your thoughts, and that’s why I love journaling! I really want to look into Katie Daleabout’s book too. I absolutely adore Katie and her podcasts!
  2. Watch a good TV show/movie -> I think this can be a great distraction. Turning on a favorite TV show or one that can make you laugh can definitely help you beat the blues. Lately I have been loving Parks and Rec. It is so funny and always has me chuckling. parks-and-recreation-569e9c124cbfe.jpgI love Leslie Knope so freakin’ much. 
  3. Listen to music -> Throw on your favorite Spotify playlist or your go-to Pandora station. Listen to your favorite song or your favorite singer. Lately, I have been loving: Georgia by Vance Joy, Heartbeats by José González, The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson, Hold Back The River by James Bay, and The Remedy by Jason Miraz. 🙂 imgres.jpg
  4. Listen to Podcasts. -> I love Madelyn Moon and Katie Daleabout. Any podcast that promotes body positivity and freedom with food I am all for. They both are so inspiring and if you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend ya do! after.jpg
  5. Pray-> Praying helps me when I’m sad, because I feel like I can always have God there to lean back on. Something that also really helps me is finding bible verses that relate to what I am feeling or going though and writing them down in my journal so I can always look back on them. IMG_5107.JPG
  6. Go on Tumblr/Pinterest-> I love these sites for finding positive quotes. Going on Tumblr is so relaxing for me, and I love going on Tumblr/Pinterest while listening to music. I don’t post personal stuff on my Tumblr since that is what this blog is for, but being able to discover new quotes and write them down in my notes is always fun. 🙂 I love champions are made and joyful pearl on Tumblr! My tumblr is: lysslickingthespoon 🙂
  7. Talk to a friend/family member-> reach out to someone when you are sad! Whether that is texting, calling, or FaceTiming a friend or family member; talking to someone about it can help tremendously. And remember- you are not weak for reaching out for help and you are not burdening them with your problems. Friends and family WANT to help. <3
  8. Color -> I love coloring or writing/drawing quotes in my notebook. I find this so relaxing for me and a great way to unwind. It is something that is so effortless yet also so relaxing and fun at the same time. 🙂 IMG_5094.JPG

    I do like to color! I love to listen to Scripture and color at the same time. It’s so restful. I also love listening to music, doing a bit of a workout, going for a walk, or just laying outside. 🙂

      That does sound so restful and peaceful. Laying outside is something I like to do too or taking my pup for a nice walk 🙂

    Such great ideas! Whenever I’m feeling sad I like to crochet, read my bible, or watch a funny TV show. Right now I’m loving How I met Your Mother 🙂

    Absolutely love these Lyss!! 🙂 Journaling has become a new thing I do to unwind and I think it’s so therapeutic. I LOVE to color too! I’m such a little kid when I see coloring books in the store! Whenever I feel sad I like to watch a funny Netflix show (aka The Office) or text a friend that always makes me smile or laugh! I’ll have to text you soon too because you definitely make me smile!!! 🙂 Hope your Memorial Day is lovely my dear! xoxo

    Love this post, Alyssa! i’ll have to check out those podcasts because I have a longggg drive for a road trip coming up in a couple of weeks. Love journaling, too!

    yes! These are all such great ideas! For me, when I’m feeling down I usually like to take a quick walk outside if it’s sunny to clear my head – or I put on some music or bake something delicious!

    When I need a pick me up, I go outside. Sometimes the fresh air is what I need.
    I have a coloring book, but I’ve yet to color it =P

      Fresh air is so helpful for when you are feeling down! I like to get outside too when I am sad to either walk or just relax to help clear my head.

    Love all of these, especially journaling! I used to be in a really good cycle and habit of it, and I want to bring it back into my life because I think it really was beneficial to me. And coloring is so wonderful; I love any activity that lets me use my hands. It really takes me back to when I was little and colored all the time! Also, Parks & Rec feeds my soul 🙂 Have a wonderful week, lovely! <3

      I want to get into the cycle of writing everyday- but it is so hard to fall out of it or forget,especially when life gets busy and we get tired! Coloring is so so wonderful. Isn’t parks and rec great?! Makes me laugh every time! Thanks Caroline, you as well!

    These are great! All have helped me at some point in my life. Going for walks is good for me as is reading/writing scripture. IT’s great to have the tools to pull out when I start feeling down in the dumps.

      Love taking my pup for a walk to help clear my head. I think so too- having these tools to fall back on when you are sad is so beneficial!

    Great job with the new blog design! I really do enjoy coloring, it is so relaxing. I also find journaling and talking it out with others to be helpful. Getting some sunshine always boosts my mood too!
